Coastal Corrosion and Public Infrastructure

Corrosion is the bane of all local governments along WA’s coast. Our harsh environment and never-ending assault of salty air makes short work of any under-prepared infrastructure. To combat this, careful consideration must be made in the selection of materials and finishes.

Exteria Coastal Shelters

Lessons learnt

Our coast is littered with examples of poorly coated steel infrastructure and low grade stainless steel elements which have not survived. Galvanized steel, while it can weather the salty environment with the right proactive maintenance, it is often overlooked to the detriment of the infrastructure. Timber although not subject to corrosion, presents longevity issues being subject to vandalism, combustion, rotting, splitting and needing regular recoating to look good.

The coastal solution

There are varied polyester powder coat systems for steel and aluminium which are warranted for up to 25 years by their manufacturers. The pinnacle however, of long term corrosion resistance, is anodised aluminium. Our premium coastal specification brings together the best, with 20-micron anodised aluminium, stainless steel fasteners and for shelter roofing; Colorbond Ultra.
