Lessons learnt
Our coast is littered with examples of poorly coated steel infrastructure and low grade stainless steel elements which have not survived. Galvanized steel, while it can weather the salty environment with the right proactive maintenance, it is often overlooked to the detriment of the infrastructure. Timber although not subject to corrosion, presents longevity issues being subject to vandalism, combustion, rotting, splitting and needing regular recoating to look good.
The coastal solution
There are varied polyester powder coat systems for steel and aluminium which are warranted for up to 25 years by their manufacturers. For most coastal projects, our standard specification is hot dip galvanised steel with a two pack paint system, a proven and cost-effective combination that performs reliably in salty environments. Where the highest level of long term corrosion resistance is required, anodised aluminium is the pinnacle, and our premium coastal specification brings together the best with 20-micron anodised aluminium, stainless steel fasteners and for shelter roofing, Colorbond Ultra.
